In 1994 ProMo organized the first Open Monuments day. Since then this event has grown into an ever-increasing success. Averages of 5000 people visit the Open Monuments. At the Open Monuments days extensive information is available about the history and architecture of the quarter and the buildings that are thrown open. For this occasion ProMo is issuing a booklet with a route description that is be available on the day itself, while signs providing information are placed near the buildings that are thrown open and along the route. The first Open Monuments was held in May1994 in Scharloo. In 1995 it was the turn of Otrobanda-Hoogstraat. 30 buildings were thrown open in Otrobanda Abou in 1997 and in 1999 Open Monuments moved to Punda. In 2001 the attention was focused on the IJzerstraat-district in Otrobanda. In 2003 monuments, such as the Maritime Museum and Villa Maria were the great crowd-pullers in Scharloo Abou. 2004 was the year of Ser�i Otrobanda.
